Here at Chorley Orthodontics, ceramic braces are one of our most popular hidden brace systems and are usually an alternative choice for those with dental issues that can’t be fixed by clear aligners. Ceramic braces offer the strength of traditional metal braces but with the discreetness and aesthetic appeal that most adults desire.

We thought it would be helpful to pull together a short guide for those of you about to embark upon orthodontic treatment and wondering what ceramic braces could offer you. Keep reading below to understand what you can expect during and after your treatment.

What are Ceramic Braces and How do They Work?

Ceramic braces work in the same way as traditional metal braces however, they are much more discreet and designed to blend in with the natural colour of the tooth’s enamel. They are made from polycrystalline alumina and consist of clear or tooth-coloured brackets with wires attached to the front of the teeth, making them a popular choice for individuals who want a more discreet appearance.

Ceramic braces are an excellent option for adults needing orthodontic treatment but who want a less noticeable alternative and who are willing to invest in the additional cost for a more discreet option.

How Are Ceramic Braces Fitted?

Clear or tooth-coloured ceramic brackets are attached to each tooth using a special adhesive and connected with an archwire that applies pressure to your teeth, moving them into alignment over time. The archwire is held in place with rubber bands which can be any colour you choose, including clear or tooth coloured. The process involves regular adjustments where your orthodontist will tighten the wires or change the bands to continue progressing toward your desired outcome.

What Will Happen Once my Ceramic Braces are Fitted?

Once your ceramic braces are fitted, understanding what happens at each stage in the process and your responsibility in it is important, so that you can get the best out of your treatment.

  • Check-Ups and Adjustments.

Regular check-ups are important to monitor progress, keep a check on your dental hygiene and adjust where necessary to ensure your treatment stays on track. The frequency of your check-ups and adjustments will depend on your particular case but usually, you can expect to visit your orthodontist every 4 to 6 weeks where they will tighten the wires and change out any bands that have become discoloured or snapped.

  • Maintaining Oral Hygiene.

As ceramic braces are attached to your teeth, ensuring that you understand how to properly clean your teeth and braces is important. Food particles can become lodged in between your teeth and braces as well as plaque build-up and bacteria so it’s important to brush your teeth at least twice a day, including flossing after every mealtime. Discolouration of the brackets and elastics is probable with ceramic braces, so avoiding high-pigmented foods and stopping smoking immediately is important as well as keeping up to date with orthodontist appointments, so they can assess your dental health and perform any necessary replacements or adjustments.

  • Length of Treatment.

Treatment typically takes 18 to 36 months, but this can vary based on individual cases and their severity. In more severe cases, ceramic braces may need to be worn for longer, but your orthodontist will track your progress and keep you informed along the way.

  • Dietary Adjustments.

There is an expectation to adapt your diet when wearing ceramic braces, as they are fixed to your teeth, therefore hard, crunchy, and sticky foods like tough pizza crusts, sticky and chewy sweets, and nuts should be avoided, alongside high-pigmented foods that tend to discolour your brackets and elastics.

  • Fixing Any Breakages.

Ceramic braces aren’t quite as tough as metal braces, making them more susceptible to damage but if you find one of your brackets or wires break then cover any sharp edges with orthodontic wax and book an appointment as soon as possible to get it fixed.

What Can I Expect After my Ceramic Braces Treatment has Finished?

Just before your treatment is due to finish, your orthodontist will speak to you about aftercare, in particular retainers and the choices that you have.

  • Removal of Braces.

Once treatment has been completed and you have a brand-new straight smile, the ceramic brackets are removed from your teeth and the glue is polished off. The process is fairly quick and painless, ensuring that you are left with no glue residue, just a perfectly straight smile you can be proud of.

  • Wearing a Retainer.

The retention phase is highly important after fixed braces, as your teeth will immediately want to move back to their original position. Your retainer can be fixed or removable, your orthodontist will work with you to decide which will work best and it should be understood that they are to be worn indefinitely.
